Ronny Chieng

actor. Chieng is currently a correspondent in the senior position on The Daily
Show on Comedy Central and creator and star of the sitcom Ronny Chieng
International Student which was first shown on ABC (Australia) as well as
Comedy Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to an
Malaysian Chinese family. Chieng was brought up in Singapore and in the United
States. He lived in Manchester, New Hampshire, between 1989 and 1994. Chieng
performed alongside Trevor Noah at a Melbourne comedy festival in 2013. Chieng
was invited to audition for the Daily Show's correspondent job two years after.
He was named one the top 10 Comics to follow by Variety in July of 2016. In
October 2016, Chieng appeared as a guest on The Daily Show to respond to an
interview with Jesse Watts on a Fox News segment that many considered racist.
Chieng airs an expletive-filled critique of the segment on Fox News that was
deemed conservative by many. Chieng also visited New York City's Chinatown in
which Watters ridiculed the residents. The viral video was featured in Slate as
well as the Washington Post. In his childhood, Chieng was an Singapore Sea Scout.
While he's been in Australia for more than a decade Chieng doesn't have
citizenship or permanent residency status in Australia. Chieng made an ad-lib
about being an apologist for cynophobia on the 2018 Daily Show. But Chieng
later admitted that he's "100 percent not scared of dogs" in an
interview.
